Sun Salutation

Sun Salutation

Sun

Sun salutation, (Surya Namaskar) a traditional sequence of postures, is an energizing, heating practice. Its flow from pose to counterpose embodies a fundamental principle of Yoga: the balance of opposites.

You can warm up first with hip opening and spine lengthening postures, or you can begin your practice with sun salutation, performed very slowly and carefully. As your body heats and opens, you can move through the sequence more quickly until your movement is continuous.

It is worth learning this sequence by heart. As you repeat several cycles, allow ujjayi breath to become the thread that weaves the postures into a flowing sequence. Try reciting mantra silently as you flow. If your mind wanders, bring your awareness back to the sound of your breath or to your mantra.

You may be surprised at how warm you become while performing sun salutation. Welcome the heat and the internal light you generate. Perhaps this practice will allow you to cut your heating bills a bit!
